Topics I've Started

  1. Iron Brigade

    14 August 2012 - 11:07 PM

Is a really damn good tower defense. It's like what Mechwarrior Lone Wolf should have been if it was set in the midst of World War II. I'll get to explaining why later, but right now, know it's worth your $12... especially if you really liked Dungeon Defenders (or thought Sanctum was ok but could have been way better).

    So, my thoughts:

My first impression of Iron Brigade was, "Oh god no, I just wasted $12." That's like 10 ice cream sandwiches. Four cheeseburgers. Five salads. At Wendy's. Mostly because of this:

(The forum won't let me post steam screenshots directly because they lack an extension. Dumb. Just click the image if you're curious.)

That's Games for Windows Live on top of a very console start screen. Yeah, bad first impression. Thankfully, once you sign in, the only thing GFWGay shows up for is adding friends, and it's a lot more painless than usual. So I guess that's nice.

Now the rest of the game, is pure awesome. It's basically Mech Warrior, set in World War II. It's tower defense, but it's presented so incredibly nicely that I wanted to shake it's hand and take it to dinner. Oh yeah, and it's from that Tim Schafer dude over at Double Fine. You know, Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, Monkey Island. Those guys.

It has a ton of different ways to approach the tower defending, and even if the combat is amatuerish, you'll still need a bit of skill on the later levels. The weapons have real punch, so just plowing down enemies is a joy. It does support a controller, but I heartily recommend turning off the Y-axis inversion and using a mouse and keyboard. It has a ton of customization; within the first three missions of the 4-player co-op our "trenches" started looking radically different, and the play styles started to complete diverge as well.

The story is sarcastic (oddly adult in places) and very funny. Granted, no big surprise there, but it's nice to know Double Fine hasn't lost its touch. The story is presented in a rather traditional manner with cutscenes and a briefing before each mission, and the missions themselves have some nice surprises and challenges.

All in all, it's a real blast and I've had a ton of fun smashing through the levels. I'm definitely willing to recommend the game and hope to play it at a future LAN with some friends.
  2. Borderlands 2

Borderlands 4-pack is $180... so per person that's $45 apiece. Not a terrible deal, the only thing I'm worried about is the ending being anything like the first one, but doubtful it will be worse because I don't think it could BE worse.

    Anyone wanna 4-pack?
  3. Steam Skin

    28 July 2012 - 03:23 PM

A lot of people ask me where I got my steam skin, so I figure it can sit here for reference sake:

  4. Steam Summer Sale FAQ

    12 July 2012 - 06:29 PM

I was typing up a long and awesome guide to the summer sale, and then somebody linked me this Reddit Thread:

There'll apparently be a new one every day with more info.

  5. EVGA Anniversary Gaming Event

    02 July 2012 - 07:53 PM

We're not related to them in any fashion, but I thought I'd let everyone know that there's an EVGA Gaming Giveaway event going on. The basic idea is that you play on their servers during any point in the contest dates and you're entered into a drawing for some pretty sweet stuff.

My friend Thomas from Palm Harbor won a GTX 460 (or 560, can't remember) off of the last one, so there's definitely a reasonable chance of winning something good.
