  1. How much bandwidth do you *need*?

    23 December 2011 - 03:31 PM

This question is in reference to a free or bundled internet connection provided by some type of student housing (UCF or off campus).

How much bandwidth do you need any time of the day to accomplish your tasks while staying happy?

6 Mbps (Symmetrical / 750KB/s) has been a number that so far has been working out well across the board. Netflix, Hulu, etc can all stream at full HD goodness while supporting concurrent browsing. This is 6 Mbps per user, not shared among multiple users. The goal is to dedicate 6 Mbps no matter what time of day - even during peak hours.

Now do you see yourself requiring more than 6 Mbps? If so, why?

Latency isn't really an ask, because it should be low if the campus network is designed properly. If contention is never reached, then latency doesn't become an issue.

Lets clarify the difference between Mbps (Megabits per second) and MB/s (Megabytes per second) [math says 8 bits to 1 byte]

I don't care about the top 10 bandwidth sucking whores on the network. They will always exist and rules will always be in place to prevent them from abusing the internet being provided to them. Those who abuse Bittorrent, P2P, or usenet on a daily basis by downloading whatever they want just because they can don't realize how much pain they inflict upon the network.
  2. Barcraft Venue Idea

    20 December 2011 - 09:53 AM

I'd like to get feedback if you all think this is something worth pursuing or if it's a waste of time.

I'm an average e-sports fan. MLG Providence was my first encounter and I've seen the whole barcraft concept take off in certain cities throughout the US.

I have access to a fairly awesome venue. It's a live sound / concert venue (used to be called "The Edge" and "8 Seconds") and holds up to 1,200. We have projectors and LCD TV panels distributed throughout along with a high end sound system to back it up. It's in downtown Orlando and has its own parking.

I would really love to see this as an e-sports hangout. It's not a bar (used for church on Sunday, sits idle the rest of the week minus any scheduled concerts, events, parties, weddings, etc). When it's idle I have full access to it (I manage the churches sound team and volunteer weekly - so it's a perk for me which I can extend to others).

It's a 20 minute drive from UCF. I'd like to get a few people involved who know the e-sports scene more so than I do and try it out. The first event would be totally free. I'm not looking to generate money off this what-so-ever... just a fun time to hang out. If it becomes successful then we would just have to cover costs for the venue (really just electricity).

Feedback / trolling / bashing welcomed! Contact me if you this is something you would be interested in helping out and putting an event together. I'd love to have this as an official LK backed event and to work with other local social groups to bring in a huge crowd (/r/orlando, etc).
  3. Host Dime

    18 July 2011 - 03:34 PM

    Worst provider ever...

No seriously, I'm kidding. The company is beyond awesome... I started to look for a new web hosting provider for my church and I decided to ask nicely if there's anything they could do to hook them up. Boom - free web hosting with no strings attached. I thought they were joking. I didn't even have to beg... just simply here are the keys and off you go.

I'm glad they're a local company and I only found out about them through the front page advert.
  4. Google Analytics

    06 July 2011 - 09:50 PM

Totally forgot we had Google Analytics enabled on this domain. It seems like it's still getting data even with the new forums... didn't expect that.

I have data from 2005 - 2011. I'd like to transfer the credentials to the right person if it would help the website out.
