I know a few of us are playing. It's definitely an interesting mod with a lot of good ideas, but you can tell its still in alpha. Sometimes zombies will randomly get mad through walls even though they cant see or hear you and stuff like that.

Also from the article:
"- Don't deathmatch. Randomly killing players makes you a huge dick. Don't be that guy."

That's actually funny because that's exactly how most people play the game, and its a real shame. Instead of zombie survival it's just a deathmatch where the first person who the other wins. Well, except on the rare occasion where that person is an idiot and doesn't finish people off.

Overall I'd say its fun, although ragey when you die and lose all your gear. Personally, I think I like the core game (Arma2 and Arrowhead) better than the mod, but its a refreshing switch.

Day Z is a lot of fun to play; it's very suspenseful and challenging. It requires a lot of critical thinking and severely punishes players who make stupid mistakes, which is a refreshing change from all of those modern games that just love to hold your hand. The fact that you have a persistent character that can carry over between servers is a great feature. It is still in alpha though, so it does have its share of bugs, including:

  • Items sometimes disappear when dropped on the ground
  • Backpacks that eat inventory items
  • Backpacks that kill you
  • Zombies that walk or attack through walls
  • Graphical glitches
  • Extremely long loading times

The game has also turned into somewhat of a deathmatch at this point; as soon as you spawn, the trick is to just run from the beach into the treeline to avoid snipers. Avoid other players you don't know, as there is a good chance they'll try to kill you. That being said, it's still a great mod, and it's really fun to jump into with groups of friends.

I play it as well. I love it and have been waiting eagerly for something even remotely close to the zombie survival genre (hint: a genre doesn't really exist.) Several things that I think need to be mentioned:

  • This is not a game for casuals. If you enjoy games like LoL and CoD, this is not for you. At it's core, Arma is a Military Simulator.
  • The game is made by 1 guy who is a developer at Bohemia (the people who make Arma)
  • Game is pretty glitchy, and Arma is a very very demanding game engine. Definately need a quad core processor and at least 4 gigs of ram. Recommend an SSD since the maps are HUGE, 225 Square KM for DayZ.
  • The guy who makes it (Rocket) tried to pitch the game to other developers and they all rejected him saying that there is absolutely no demand for such a game
  • For a mod that is 1 month old, it has 20,000 unique players and growing by several thousand per day. There are probably over 20+ servers around the world which are pretty consistantly full (each server has roughly 50-100 slots
  • It's free if you have Combined Ops aka Arma 2 + Operation Arrowhead.
  • For a game that is not on sale, it has been in the top 10 on steam's top sales for the past couple weeks. I would bet many more people are waiting for it to go on sale.

Mod is only ~100 megs.

Bought it today and thoroughly enjoyed myself. ARMA2 is like an outdoors Rainbow 6 with terrible AI, and the 30 minutes I spent traversing a treacherous Chernogorsk with zombies and bandits left and right was intense and great fun.

New patch out, supposedly a bunch of bug fixes but more importantly the zombie counts are supposed to have doubled*. Interesting.

*according to my personal impression, not sure if it's actually doubled but there are definitely way more.

Yeah it came out a day or so ago. Played it last night, it is indeed more difficult, on par with when the mod first came out. I'm fine with the additional zombies, add more tension. Also the sounds are a nice touch, better than before.

The Acolytes of the Bean are not currently accepting beanless members. Gather 10 cans of beans to have your request heard. I promise to not kill you and add your beans to the bean throne.

Text version of that interview, but not everything was written probably. Video is still on processing lol (been 6 hours).

Quote

Hall's plans for standalone DayZ were vast. He mentioned diseases spreading through faeces and vomit; removing the user interface; using household weapons; allowing people to craft splints to help mend broken bones. Vehicles he said were a longer-term, "end-game" feature to implement.

He's definitely making it even more realistic, can't wait to buy it if they ever go that route.
