I'm having trouble booting my FX-8150 with my ASUS sabertooth 990FX. The CPU LED light turns red whenever I press the power button and the system will not even POST. One solution people have been saying online is that you need to update the BIOS first with an older AMD CPU, and then put in the FX-8150 for you to boot. I was never able to try this since I didn't have another AMD CPU on hand. Does anybody know if this is true?

I tried just about everything else and decided to RMA the board. When I get my board back, and I still have the same problem, would anybody do me a huge favor and lend me their AMD CPU just until I can update BIOS.

By browsing the newegg entries for the processor and motherboard, this seems to be the case. But I shipped mine board out today so hopefully it comes back with the lastest revision BIOS.

I actually have a spare Athlon II X2 on hand. I'll have it until tomorrow, but it doesn't look like you have the motherboard available anymore. I hope the RMA works out for you.

I had a system once that needed a bios update to properly recognize the cpu, but it still worked without it. The only difference is that the computer didn't know what kind it was, so it didn't run as fast or as cool as it should have. Don't know if the same thing happens all the time, or if i just got semi-lucky. I'm not sure about the red led, but if you get the same problem after getting your board back, check to see if its your ram. If you have more than one stick, try putting in a single stick, and if that doesn't work, try a different stick. Wouldn't hurt to check before doing something that requires a lot more work like changing the cpu.

I think I should have asked you guys first before I RMA'ed. 2 weeks is gonna feel like forever.... I haven't even gotten a confirmation that its been shipped yet...

Well my RAM is technically not qualified for this board, but on newegg, people use the same RAM with the same board and it works just fine for the,. I did try a single stick of RAM before I RMA'd, though it was only one stick in one slot. And the memory LED didn't turn on so I didn't really focus on that.

That's how Intel's P67/Z68 chipsets are too. You need to do a bios update to add support for the upcoming Ivy Bridge processors. You may get back the latest revision motherboard, but the chances if you getting the latest bios update are slim (a lot of boxes just sitting on the shelves and they don't pull them off to update them).

See if you can borrow Ohmecks' processor to update, if the RMA you get back isn't the latest bios version.
