My roommate is a freaking n00b. He doesn't like using other methods -_-.

I've heard stories about people here in UCF actually getting fined for downloading music off limewire.

Happened to a friend's GF's roommate.

Doesn't protocol encryption help mask what you're downloading?

Not really. Protocol Encryption is considered a rather weak encryption method and is used more effectively as a mask, rather than a good encryption. PE is basically an attempt to bypass ISP throttling, not protect data.

The whole push by RIAA attacking schools (probably the biggest offender at the time) was because of I2Hub, a program created by some students at UMass (Oddly not a super strong tech school, but ok...digression commence!) that was similar to limewire but utilized I2 network vs the regular internet channels. For those unfamiliar with I2, or Internet 2, it's mostly used by Educational institutions and is quite fast. RIAA got wind that students were peer-sharing gigabytes of data over this method. UCF looked one day at their charts after getting notice from RIAA and went ZOMG ILLEGAL DATA USAGE!? As they could see when the spread started...think I2 usage went up like 15000% from the average use in a month time. So RIAA got to issue some of the bigger offenders with lawsuits, they chose 12 schools and 10 students from each I believe (I don't think UCF was one luckily) with the crazy lawsuits RIAA is known for.

UCF students persisting in its use just got kicked off ResNet, had to go through student conduct board n' such to restore their access.

As for downloading stuff...just build a remote box at your parent's house and remote DL then FTP it over later...they're not using their bandwidth anyways :)

UCF was not that lucky from what I heard about it.

By the way, we don't allow people in CECS to download stuff. I am sure it is more widespread in our college than others, but we actually track MAC addresses and IPs in all the labs, to find out where someone is. If you are an international student don't risk it, if caught you can be expelled (probably not on the first offense), and if you are, your visa is taken away.. so you get to go home because you wanted to watch a movie in a lab. :(

Where's a good walkthrough for how to do this? Someone told me you probably have to leave a computer on back at home to do it. Is there another way to do it without leaving a computer on. VPN? I'm not too familiar with this side of things.

Actually you wouldn't be able to VPN, UCF blocks outbound VPN connections :P

No offense to superzombie or anyone trying to torrent on UCF internet, but if you wanted to torrent you're simply fucked right now. Take it from somebody who got caught and got away with a warning: DO. NOT. DO. IT. They will catch you.

You're better off moving off campus and getting godly internet with those $200/month extra that the towers charges. Also, please do make damn sure that you dont leave utorrent running on your laptop when you drive on campus and sit in the student union for 6 hours... like I did >_>. 2 hours later I got a "LOL I GOTCHU" e-mail from the UCF NOC.

You should just SSH tunnel traffic through whatever ports you want to an external shell(you'll need to rent/borrow one).

But VPN(assuming PPTP) being blocked is pretty bad considering it /is/ a very public network. I'd honestly want to VPN all my traffic so that some other guy on resnet or w.e does not just sniff out all my information. I'm sure configuring OpenVPN and your VPN server properly would allow you to bypass those restrictions(and renting the VPN from any decent provider will get you tech support which will inform you of what you need to do).

Does UCF have rules against encryption or similar? Obviously illegal downloads are bad and would get you kicked out, but there's nothing against a student encrypting his transmissions is there?

You're utilizing their service, they have the right to the data transferred over it technically, as they are liable for it.

At least that's what they would tell you regarding any legal action needed.
