I built myself a new gaming system back in February, and it's running beautifully. However, I neglected to buy any new peripherals for it - I'm still using the same mouse that came with my Asus G1S laptop when I bought it in 2007, and I've been using this keyboard since I built my last desktop in 2005.

Well, the mouse has been dying at random times during gameplay (usually requiring me to unplug it and plug it back in) and the keyboard does not have a good keyboard layout (the function keys are too far away, which is not good for games that require their use, such as Dystopia).

Do you guys have any suggestions for suitable replacements? Obviously I'm looking for wired USB devices (no wireless or bluetooth), and I'm not looking to spend absurd amounts of cash (no $100+ super-uber-pro-gamin' keyboards/mice, please).

In all seriousness, I've been using the Razer Tarantula keyboard and the Logitech G5 mouse for awhile now. I don't have any complaints with them at all. The Tarantula has 10 macro keys as well as the ability to change what most of the other keys do as well. the mouse is pretty basic but lets you change the DPI on the fly through 5 different settings (3 if you don't install the drivers for it). Not sure how much the Tarantula costs now or if you can even buy them new anymore though.

EDIT: Guess you won't be buying the Razer Tarantula; it's still $100 on the website XD I was able to pick it up from a CircuitCity when they were still open for $50.

G9 and G15 rev 2 are what I'm packing. Both suit my needs (dev and gaming, with gaming spanning from RTS to just about every type of FPS) quite well and they're both pretty reasonable in price nowadays. G19 is tempting over the G15 though... Caveat for the G9 is that it's a claw grip mouse, and while the swappable grips are incredibly nice, at the end of the day it's still a claw grip mouse. Personally I like claw grips, but if you don't then you'll want to look at the G5 or something else.

Bought a $10 mouse from the on-campus computer store like a year and a half ago and it works like a charm.

You should really just go to the campus computer store and look for something simple. I'm sure you could get a decent enough mouse and keyboard for $20-30 total.

I'm using a $10 logitech keyboard I bought at my job and my mouse is a Razer DeathAdder. Like what Portman said, great mouse + cheap keyboard = gaming.

I did have a problem using MS's low-end keyboard where if you pressed more than two keys at the same time like if you push down shift+C+w (walk-crouch-move forward) in most FPS games, I would get a beep and I wouldn't move. getting a logitech fixed that.

I would strongly look into mechanical keyboards. If your looking for something to last nothing can beat mechanical.

This thread has a lot of useful information. http://www.overclock...oard-guide.html
