Anybody know why a good-as-new gateway gaming laptop (Gateway P-7805u) running Vista Service Pack 2 wouldn't be able to access a broadband modem it recognized prior to my moving to college dorms?

Our router is a D-Link DI604, which is a really old. It would seem it's just too old for my computer to recognize it, but we have another Vista computer that has no trouble.

Anyway, I'm stumped and I has a sad.

If you lappy worked fine with the router before, chances are the router is just being pissy. Try a reset to factory defaults, that usually clears things up. :)

But won't that delete everything I've put on my laptop? Unless I'm wrong in assuming there's no factory default for routers. :P

I too do this. I have one of those fancy wood plaques that go over the door with latin writing on it. It translates in english to "Brain is a real doctor"

Well, I have not had the opportunity to try a factory default reset. However, further tech support claims that the error is somewhere in my 'Winsock Catalog'. Anyone know how to troubleshoot/repair that, perchance? (I only ask because ATT wants to charge 129 bucks for one instance of tech support, which definitely isn't happening.)
P.S. I believe Brain is a real doctor.

Download that and run it. That should reset all of XP Winsock (AND VISTA/Win7) registries. I've used it and it works.

Does it matter that my computer uses Vista and not XP?
