I have a 7 PC's, 5 printers and 2 NAS HD's . - I want to connect them without breaking the ResNet agreement.

Rules of UCF Resnet (that I found)

1 Do not use a router on ResNet
2 Do not run Ad HOC
3 Do not run a DHCP server on ResNet
4 Do not run a Http Server
5 Only one device at a time can be connected to ResNet
6 No P2P or Torrent services.

My house runs on a Linksys wrt54g with a 3rd party firmware, other than bringing my 3 PC's, Palm pre phone, 1 printer and a 1 NAS to UCF, the rest will be at home.

I think I found enough loopholes to do anything without breaking rules.

A) Connecting devices the internet:
idea 1: Run Proxy DNS server on a main computer, have a router use a proxy connection to run a DHCP on Proxy (not ResNet) (requires 2 Ethernet jacks on the main comp), then connect everything via wireless after that.

idea 2: Run a Proxy Bluetooth server, run everything on bluetooth, possibly break FCC regulation for building overpowered bluetooth antenna.

B ) P2p
idea 1: run at home on a home server, FTP or gateway it to PC on campus.

When I was on campus, I connected everything through my main PC (two Ethernet ports), and apparently they don't have a problem with that since it's just one device that's hard-connected to the wall. It was mostly my xbox and a laptop, so no big deal there.

For P2P, I recommend running it on a home server, and FTPing only the smallest and most necessary files (they'll see the bandwidth usage no matter what and will grab you for either large transfers or a small consistent bandwidth usage over a long time). For everything else, use an external hard drive to transfer over your obviously legal files when you visit the 'rents.

My question is, what the fuck do you need seven PCs for?

I'm assuming you've moving into a dorm, though I could be wrong, I don't know where you're going to have room for that much hardware without driving your room mate crazy. I guess in the 'closet' or under the bed, but then that's pretty much ever last bit of your personal space. And what was already said, they will bust you for using too much bandwidth so the FTP idea probably won't work out.

NASA requires all interns to have unnecessary equipment, and they have to brag at least 5 times on each forum they visit (introduction thread, noob thread, back pain thread, this thread, and one more to come).

Some of these poor individuals think some people actually care, and might look up to them. There is no help for them.

Nice Plant vs Zombies Avatar :)

I do technical work so therefore acquired PC's, Most companies throw away old machines when they need work, (cost too much in man hours to diagnose, fix and also down time) 4 of the 7 comps were these. (mainly pentium 4, 512mb Xp machines)

Since I dont need to pay for diagnostics, I take the throw-aways and fix what is normaly HD, and/or Bios issues. I normally sell them on Craig's list in the $150 range (Pentium 4 with 1gb ram and 500gb)

Kept the ones that I liked. Used them for BF2 and CSS servers.

Sounds like a plan to me :)

Will only be bringing one desktop, one laptop, a netbook and printer, my LCD screens function as a 42 inch 1680p HDx2TV (for less than 300usd), so party at my place in the fall :)

Should all fit on the included dorm desk

Is there a rule against NATing your devices so that it only looks like one? Sure it says no routers, but a firewall can do NAT aswell.

Everyone crammed into a dorm room to watch something spread across 3 monitors? Count me out.

This. After using my 26" Flat screen for a monitor, I can honestly say that the desks felt REALLY small. I had just enough space in front of it for a keyboard then a bit of room to the right for a notebook or something. Good luck with a 42" though.

Also, Dawn of War 2 is awesome.

My 24" 1920x1200 and 20" 1600x1200 fit fine and don't feel cramped on the desks @the Towers.

And Dawn of War 2 is indeed quite awesome.

Do most of the dorms have Wifi?

If so I think I found my solution.
I was raging because of the impossible task of locating a the fray in a 50ft ethernet cable. Ditched it. Too late to run out for a new one. Searched for an alternative solution. Learned something new.

Apparently you can run routers in "reverse". Instead of a router broadcasting a wifi connection, have the router connect to another wifi system. Basically as wifi-to-ethernet.

Though its a router, its not routing anything. Its not connected to the resnet wall jack. Makes your desktop look as a wifi enabled laptop to resnet.

Now I might look into getting those 9db antenna upgrades ($5-ebay) for better reception.

Technically you're not allowed to have wireless internet in any on-campus dorm, but people buy routers and set them up anyways. I've heard stories of them coming to get the routers removed, but I've never known it to happen anyone.

It happens, but not with the method he described. If you plug a wireless router into the wall to broadcast free internet from the hard connection, they will find it and remove it. We do that often.

The issue he will have is that the wireless is crap most of the times I have been on it, since it is shared with every wireless device. I am not sure how good it is in the dorms though.

My friends who have wireless in dorms say it's pretty reliable (I've used it and had no problems), just don't make it public.
