Well, almost every game out there rewards skill, so I don't really think that's a factor.
There's a difference between being a factor and destroying fun because most participants lack expertise in the game. CounterStrike really is no fun for those who aren't serious about it at least on some level. Compare that to Team Fortress 2 or even Battlefield 3 where newer players can find niches to fill and I think you see what I mean.

As far as the other stuff, we may as well take out Dystopia, Empires, Eternal Silence, Garry's Mod, HL2: Deathmatch, Killing Floor, UT2k4 and ZPS from the list. Not enough members care about them, and they are almost never played at lans.
Only thing I'd disagree with there would be Killing Floor. I've seen that played a bit recently and its low player count and lack of a competitive component makes it viable to put a KF game together.
That said, I don't think anything particularly precludes games from being added to the list or added back... I mean, if you really want to go on a mission to save a game or game(s), most LANs have plenty of freeplay time for whatever. Get some CS: S or Dystopia or KF or etc games going and show their relevance.
