Warcraft 3: DotA!

Sorry man, last time that was played was at least a half-year ago! If that changes, I'll definitely update the list, but for now most people play Heroes of Newerth or Starcraft 2 if they want that experience.

Actually, the SC2 problem was only for the beta. We've been allowed to have a shit load of people play it at our recent LANs.

What? :(

No one's played those in the past 10 LANs, and staff doesn't have them planned for next semester at this time... :/
So they aren't really regularly played anymore.

=\

Also, Battlefield 3 shows up twice in the list. I think the second entry was supposed to be Dungeon Defenders.

CS: S has in recent memory been meh because as the long, competitive history of CounterStrike reveals it's a game that very much rewards experience, skill, and knowing the ins and outs of it all. In the past couple of years we really haven't had many players who are terribly familiar with the game, and it tends to always lead to the few who actually want to play CS: S dominating the crap out of everyone else.

And being a skill-based game isn't what kills it. It's just the huge variability in our skill population. StarCraft 2 could suffer from similar issues as CS: S but doesn't because it's a popular game right now and many of our members put a lot of time into knowing it and being able to play with other members. Dawn of War 2 is on that list as well, and it has caused problems where some members have needed to recuse themselves from LAN games or find other ways to participate, but there is a large enough population of similar-skilled players who want to play it that it's viable. If the same could happen again for CS: S, I'm sure staff would include it in the games lists and plan events around it. Otherwise, it's just like Brood War =(

DoD: S I don't think suffers from the same problem as CS: S so much as it just does from many members not having it/not caring about it and other, competing games being more desirable (ex Red Orchestra 2, TF2). Shattered Horizon never really took off. And Soldat is something we haven't really played outside of Classic LANs anyway, and I think those LANs are exceptions as far as the games list is concerned (would be nice to get confirmation on that) and might even be cause for CS: S and DoD: S.

quoted stuff

Well, almost every game out there rewards skill, so I don't really think that's a factor. As far as the other stuff, we may as well take out Dystopia, Empires, Eternal Silence, Garry's Mod, HL2: Deathmatch, Killing Floor, UT2k4 and ZPS from the list. Not enough members care about them, and they are almost never played at lans.

There's a difference between being a factor and destroying fun because most participants lack expertise in the game. CounterStrike really is no fun for those who aren't serious about it at least on some level. Compare that to Team Fortress 2 or even Battlefield 3 where newer players can find niches to fill and I think you see what I mean.

Only thing I'd disagree with there would be Killing Floor. I've seen that played a bit recently and its low player count and lack of a competitive component makes it viable to put a KF game together.

That said, I don't think anything particularly precludes games from being added to the list or added back... I mean, if you really want to go on a mission to save a game or game(s), most LANs have plenty of freeplay time for whatever. Get some CS: S or Dystopia or KF or etc games going and show their relevance.

I only removed stuff that both: 1) Wasn't played commonly/regularly at lans ... and 2) Was not planned for a forthcoming LAN event. ;)

There were at least a couple of impromptu CSS matches earlier on in the year which seems to be more than some of the other games.
What does it matter how I loose it?
