Symptoms:
-My computer randomly drops my internet connection. I am not the only one on the connection. The other computers are not affected.
-Happens more often when I'm downloading files via Bit Torrent, however it occasionally happens during normal use (i.e. doing nothing, browsing the interwebs, etc.)
-Usually a computer restart fixes the problem...temporarily.

Any thoughts? Crappy integrated network card? Finicky ethernet cable? Other ideas?

Good way to eliminate one of those possible issues: switch out the ethernet cable and see if the problem persists. My first thought was the network card but the cable is obviously easier to check.

Assuming its not hardware failure...

Can you ping your computer from another computer (turn off windows firewall first) when it "loses internet", can your computer ping the default gateway when you lose internet, can you ping a public ip like 4.2.2.2 (if yes its probably a dns issue), try changing your computer's IP to a static ip outside of the dhcp pool, if your already static it might possibly an IP conflict with some other device on the network maybe like an iphone, if none of these work I'll add more commas later.

I have no idea how to "ping" something (yet I know how to set a static IP... go figure...).

I'm gonna assume you're using some sort of router. If so, renewing your IP address via ipconfig should solve the problem. You could also try flushing the DNS cache or disconnecting/reconnecting to the network via either the wifi configuration utility or unplugging your ethernet cable.

Google is your friend.

You open command prompt [Start -> Run -> type cmd then press enter -> then type "ping 4.2.2.2" (without quotes) as an example. If it says theirs a reply then obviously its working, if it goes real slow and says "Request timed out" then it wasnt able to ping that IP.

Review of what everyone said in one post:

Quote

1. Turn off Windows Firewall.

2. Ping the gateway and then a public ip address (www.google.com is a good one)
- "ipconfig /all" and look for 'Default Gateway' IP.
- "ping 10.82.whateverIPis /n 100" to see if you have a stable connection to your router.
- "ping www.google.com /n 100" to see if you have a stable connection to the internet.

3. Switch out the network cable to see if that fixes the issue. See #1.

4. Set your IP to a new static IP to exclude any possibility of device conflict. If there are no results, try refreshing with a Dynamic IP. See #1.

5. With everything else reasonably excluded, try restarting the router. If that doesn't work, remove the router from the chain for testing. See #1.

6. Still having problems? Post here, it might be a network card issue or something we forgot.

It'll save him more time if he just learns how to fish.
