So I'm going to build myself an HTPC for muh house, mostly for HD movie playback. I was considerings a dual-core amd setup for price effectiveness, but was wondering if anyone had any existing setups that they'd recommend?

For AMD and if you're price conciousness....

Sempron 140
motherboard with AMD 785g chipset (and possibly unlock the second core on the Sempron 140 turning it into a Regor 240 dual core athlon)
Radeon 4350 (hardware HD playback capability)
at least 2gigs RAM if you put Vista on it or Win7. 1gig if XP.

I had one running on some pretty horrible system specs once (Less than 2ghz single core). I ran Boxee for content play back. I took the system apart because I preferred just streaming the content through other devices from my main PC.

Yo dawg, buy my PC! It's got a 2.53ghz C2D, 4GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 4850 and a 500GB HDD.

I can grab model specifics when I get off of work if you want as well.

i thought the idea of the htpc was to have a small form factor pc, which typically means only 1 maybe 2 hd's, that way it looks like another of boxes in the theatre system.

While that is generally the idea, my main concern is noise and ability to have HDCP support/DVI built in. If I feel the need I can always move it into an htpc styled case, but for the time being a normal desktop will suffice.

I have some legal expenses that I'll have to be taking care of in the next few weeks so all of my toys are going to be on their way out :(

As far as price goes would $400 sound reasonable? I'm not really up on current prices so, lemme know and we can go from there!
