Ran across this a few weeks ago, and have been trying it out on my main machine. Works much better than that awful Norton crap, and doesn't chew up cpu and memory to no purpose. This software has received enthusiastic endorsements from several prominent security experts, including Steve Gibson of GRC.com.

Go here to grab a copy for yourself, and try it out: http://www.microsoft...ity_Essentials/. It's free for home use forever, no subscriptions or other weird crap needed. Updates silently, as often as it needs to, and only shows up when you have a problem.

With AVG getting more bloated with each new release, this might be a good idea...

Sure. I was getting tired of using Norton 2003 anyway.

Thanks.

ive read several articles about it and have been waiting for it to finally release. appears all the major vendors are pissed because MSE is actually pretty decent. lot of security experts are fairly impressed with it.

I use NOD 32 and have been happy with it. I do not think I will be changing any time soon until I get some random fucked up virus. I've used NOD 32 for over 2 years now and still never had a virus. Yay me! =)

Hmm, good thing I don't use AVG on my personal machine then. I prefer to free ball it.

Yeah AVG got pretty shitty over the years. Was bloated and had a lot of false positives for games. Moved on to Avira Antivir a while ago, and ditched that for MS Security Essentials a few days ago. It's fast, incredibly lightweight and apparently has a very good detection rate. Between this and Win 7 I'd say MS is doing a pretty damn good job lately.

So has anyone been having any issues with this lately? So far I'm getting temp files popping up in my terabyte drive that don't self-delete, and now it's saying that I haven't done a system scan in a while, and I did two scans today.

Damn..

I installed it at 9pm and found Trojan Win32/Orsam!rts inside one of my CD images. Once I found it, and selected remove, Security Essentials froze up at 77%. I ripped out my ethernet cable and for hour my computer's RAM usage spiked to 90%. My screen blacked out once, and I was logged out twice. After gaining some control, I attempted to manually delete the image, which worked. I restarted and BAM!! It was back!! I had Security Essentials quarantine it instead, and after 15mins it was successful. I now am backing up and doing a clean install of windows 7 now. I am writing this on my laptop. The 'image' was of Warhammer: DOW2 and I have now learned a lesson the hard way. If it wasn't for this topic, I would never have found it. (Never uses anti-virus). Thanks Halbyrd.
