Was wondering if anyone here has any experience with utilizing the C4 Engine. Since syam's job has been expanded and he is way overworked and doesn't really have sufficient time to devote to developing Sakura (he's still working on it but it just won't be ready soon enough for Wartide to utilize), we have been doing a lot of research into third party engines recently.

We have closely considered Leadwerks 2, Unity, OGRE, etc... but continue to come down to, in terms of feature and toolsets, C4 and Leadwerks 2. Leadwerks 2 is hampered by its absolutely terrible licensing terms (only $125 per a license but no source code and modding is strictly forbidden but mod support is a major component of Wartide). C4 on the other hand, while being more expensive at $350 per a license, has no such draconian restrictions and includes source code (very integral for us as we are looking to integrate PhysX because in an RTS/RTT it is very important to shift as much work as possible off the cpu and onto the gpu b/c the cpu gets absolutely hammered with work; we're also considering implementing Stardock's Impulse Reactor).

I have spoken with one programmer friend of mine who has a license for C4 but he is more or less waiting for the big 1.6 update before really using it. I also have exchanged pm's with a C4 community member who has managed to create a plug-in basically for PhysX integration and his comments on the engine were only positive. Nevertheless, we are on the verge of making a major purchase so I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with the engine that they'd like to share- your comments are greatly appreciated!

Yeah I dunno, it works all right, I guess. There are some limitations that they don't really cover in the documentation and when it comes to actual production it can be kind of a hindrance. Stuff made with the C4 engine also turns out to be vaguely unstable and prone to a lot of compatibility errors.

Hm, what are those limitations? The instability and compatibility errors are also offputting (though yay to having access to the source code and having good coders those may be addressable).

I'm just trolling you dude. I'm a political science major with absolutely no knowledge in relation to the technical aspects of video game production. =P

you just have to use an "if" statement when testing a variable's value
