Well, winsauce and moar. Open to anyone, not just LANKnights.

I'm looking for freshmen/sophomores/juniors who want to build a professional submission ready portfolio for Game Design. This project would focus upon giving each member the training, experience, and tools to be ready for employment in the game industry by the time you graduate UCF.

All I ask is that you:
-Have a love for the Sci-Fi genre.
-Are dedicated to achieving a high-paying job in the gaming industry, and love playing games.
-Are willing to work in a team with others of varying skillsets, and both learn and teach.
-Can work to develop a next-gen FPS in order to build a portfolio suitable for any type of game.

At this point I'm looking for a designer and a programmer, but anyone that wants to end up in the game industry is welcome. If you know someone who wants to be in the industry, point them here!

------

Designer:

-Willing to work with high-quality FPS level design.

-Willing to learn basic scripting (like LUA).

-Loves writing.

-Loves working in 3D and building things.

Programmer:

-Willing to learn C++ and LUA.

-Willing to work with a pre-existing engine, and experiment with it.

-Loves tinkering with things to make cool effects.

Guessing this is just unpaid-for-experience? I would love to help but I already have Warshop Studios/Wartide on my hands as well as upcoming contract work beyond that so I lack the time but also this sounds like an opportunity for someone with less experience who is looking for a catapult. Nevertheless, I am willing to serve as an adviser or Senior Designer or something if such is desired.

id be willing to try, or atleast assist in the project. The problem is time, my schedule is all over the place so I can't make any promises on time but I can try and am willing. I have some skills in C, C++ (been 2years since I used it though - might need help with the syntax), learning Java, have always wanted to know more about LUA.

This sounds cool. I have no experience in any real programming languages (save a little JavaScript, but we all have a little JavaScript), so I need some experience if I want to go places.

I'll be sending out PM's with extra info in a bit. The engine that seems best suited for a next-gen FPS with the greatest ease-of-access is CryEngine2 (Crysis). All of the game specific source code is exposed in an incredibly intuitive way through C++ and Lua*, and it comes bundled with all the tools necessary to complete next-gen assets in 3D. The level editor is comparable (and in some cases better than) the Source and Unreal engines.

*compared to any other commercial game engine with modding access.

I'm interested, but I don't feel like I have much to offer. I took two years of java in high school, intro to C last semester, and am currently in CS1. I've played around with Hammer, and found that to be a fun experience.

I'm curious as to what you have in mind for a 'next-gen' project.

So it's a total conversion mod then rather than a game? Otherwise, for a standalone game, CryEngine 2 costs a ****load as does UE3, Source, or any other *major* commercial engine. However, there are plenty of indie alternatives from Elemental Engine 2 (free) to Leadwerks 2.1 (~$150 for a commercial license last I checked)- the former being heavily Lua-based for dev with the latter being quite graphically impressive with a very good editor (graphically it's the indie equivalent of CryEnigne 2 and can definitely output some very nice next-gen visuals).

?

You mean art or design?

Design (for video games anyway) = Gameplay Design, Storyline Design (Lore Design as well), Level Design, Interface Design, Balancing, and potentially Scripting/2D Conception (typically those last two are talents/skills that designers from the aforementioned categories have to supplement their capabilities- for example, a Storyline Designer that can create 2D Concepts of environments or characters or etc can oftentimes more effectively convey their story; similarly, a Gameplay Designer or Level Designer that can script can tweak/tune/test scenarios more quickly and directly).

3D Art = High Poly and/or Low Poly Modeling/Animation/Mapping (Normal, Specular, Parallax, Ambient Occlusion, etc...) and potentially Texturing as well (largely as an extension of Mapping)

I'm very excited about all the enthusiasm here at UCF in game development. For those interested, I will be taking a few minutes during this Saturday's LAN to overview the project, its goals, and some of the cool stuff I've been cooking up. Feel free to bring friends even if they aren't in LANKnights, or have them e-mail me: derek at systemscreative.com

You don't need experience, just motivation. This project will teach much of what you need to know for professional game design with the end result of giving you a big boost to your professional portfolio.

See you all Saturday!

Ok, I have the modcenter site ready, and will post the link when the front end is finally marked active.

As an FYI, there are some people from the UCF Anime Spot club trying to make a Game Developer's Club. I checked it out and they all seemed pretty cool and motivated. I'm working with them to get everyone involved in the Winsauce sessions, as to get everyone up to the same skill level for game design. If you're interested, let me know, I think their meetings are every Wednesday at 7pm at Burger King in the Union.

Just to restate: Winsauce is NOT planning on making a commercial/full game, rather it's aim is to teach members all the skills necessary for a career in the game industry and help them develop a professional next-gen portfolio.
