So recently, i've noticed a rattling noise comming from my case. Most of the time it starts not long after i boot up in the morning, and after a few quick taps on the case stops the rattle. It started to get a bit worse, so i opened the case and snooped around, trying to find out what fan was causing the problem. It turns out my stock HSF for my P4 likes to rattle, so i'm beginning to worry about it possibly failing without notice. I'd like to just get a new stock one from Intel, but trying to contact their tech support is horrible, and I lack the retail box, so I don't know any of the serial numbers necessary to either register my processor with Intel or even contact Intel in the first place, so i'm screwed.

Anyone with any experience with Socket 478 P4's, please suggest a solid, non-expensive replacement for the HSF, or a way to get a new retail one.

to what? the heatsink? AFAIK, yes, the sink and fan are one unit.

EDIT: I just purchased this cooler off newegg. It was cheap, got good reviews and a friend of mine has one on his P4 workstation comp and he said it runs very well on his. It wasn't a big investment, so i'm not too worried.
I forgot to get any thermal paste, is that a big enough problem to buy some?

Judging by the picture, it probably already has thermal grease applied on the Heatsink fan. Most CoolerMasters do. Usually when they HSF comes in one of those plastic trays, its to protect the grease. If not or you want more quality grease (I don't know what type CoolerMaster uses) SVC had 6 grams of AS5 for $6.50 shipped. There was another site that had 12 grams for $10 shipped, but I don't remember where.

There should be no thermal compound applied to the fan, only a thin layer covering the core of the cpu. It's used to ensure better contact between the core and the base of the heatsink. Applying it to the fan would only cause problems.

That's what I meant. By Heatsink Fan, I'm referring to the entire unit, IE, Heatsink and Fan, without the and, just like you see the entire unit also referred to a HSF. I'm not stupid, any idiot knows you don't apply thermal paste to the fan.
