Hey guys. Got a few HD questions here. Now when it comes to brands, I've always been a Seagate drive kinda guy. Now I found a deal on a Western Digital drive and am curious, how's this brand? I know it's one of the big dogs in the market but if the quality noticable different between WD and Seagate? Other question regards raid. Can I set up a raid configuration w/ IDE drives? Is it worth it? Can I gain performance out of it? Which raid configuration would you recommend? Thanks for the help guys. Ciao!

I believe you have to make sure that you motherboard could handle doing raid for IDE ports, could be wrong. I know abit has a driver that you can download for there mobo's and it will let you install raid on IDE ports. Gain from raid on IDE....well unless you want backup for if one drive goes down then yes there is a gain, but I doubt there will be a speed gain, that all depends on the speed of the HD.

EDIT: here is tomshardware talking about a raid IDE controller http://www4.tomshard...orage/20021112/

and if your going for speed set up raid 0. unless your looking for some kind of data redundancy and error correction go with raid 0.

Yes, whenever you change hard drive controllers (specifically raid controllers) you will want to do a fresh install of Windows.

Segate is a so-so brand, I'm a Maxtor / WD guy myself after many years of experimenting.

The drives I have had crash the most (other then IBM drives which I never purchase) are Maxtor. Had to RMA one particular drive 3 times.
