So I finally got off my ass and installed the free version of 3DMark05, after my co-worker who is also a a PC gamer insisted i benchmark the new system. So I run the test(3 visual, 2 CPU i think), and the first visual test is remarkably slow, like 5-6 FPS slow. I'm like, ok, mabye it's just pushing it hard to find it's limit. I had never used any benchmarking utility before, so I didn't know what to expect. 2nd visual test does the same, but at like 3-4 FPS, max. 3rd and final one is horrendous, at 1-2 FPS max. Finally the CPU tests come, and for some reason the screen now shifted 2 inches to the right, leaving a large black margin on the left. This time it's measuring at about 7 FPS, the highest the utility has hit so far. Then finally the 2nd CPU test runs and it's straight 1 FPS the entire test. 1546 marks was the score I believe, which I have no clue if that's good or not, i'm guessing no.
What's wierd is this system has not shown any sign of slowness in video intensive or CPU intensive processes. CS:Source runs at 75 fps during the stress test, and UT2k4 almost matches that at like 60-70, both at high graphic settings.
It's a P4 2.4c, Asus p4p800se, 512mb pc2700 kingston hyperx ram, WD 80gb MD, Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 128mb, which isn't horrible by any means. Am I doing something wrong with the utility, or is that really my honest score?

no that is an accurate score for your system. I have a 2500+ @ 2.39 ghz, 2x512mb corsair xms pc3200c2 (2-2-2-11) and a BFG 6800 @ 407/815 and I barely break 4000. I get about 10,300 in 2003 and 18,500 in 2001.
also, is your cpu overclocked? some of the 2.4c's with the M0 stepping have been known to hit the upper 3 ghz range.

nope, completely stock settings, I don't really plan to OC the system. I honestly don't think it's necessary.

Also, you are using PC2700 ram with a 200mhz fsb cpu...you should be using PC3200. You're bottlenecking the cpu to about 83% of what it would normally perform at stock.

200mhz fsb? I believe it was listed as a 533mhz. I went with the reccommended RAM in the Asus manual, which was PC-2700. I was told by many people that PC-3200 would be overkill, especially since i'm not OCing.
EDIT: And I made a typo in the original post. It's a P4 2.4A Prescott. 533FSB.

There is no such thing as a 2.4A 533FSB Prescott P4 core. The Prescott cores are the ones that run at 800 FSB, not 533. The Northwoods run 533.
You obviously have encountered the whole reason why no one uses 3d mark anymore, because it doesn't actutally benchmark on real game situations. As you have experienced, your system runs the latest games just fine, but when it comes to the latest benchmarks, it's not exactly up to par.
There's a reason why no reviewer sites anymore post 3d mark scores, but only results from the latest games. Why? Because people don't play benchmarks, they play GAMES!!
